Domino dancing

Did you watch Domino Day last week? I did. Well, parts of it. But since the kids were holding the tv set hostage, I had no choice but to watch too. Funny how thousands of falling domino stones can fascinate people to such great extent.

I wonder what the Domino Day builders would have to say about this great commercial for one of my favourite brands ever (in terms of communication that is, I'm still acquiring the taste, even after all these years :-) ). Yep, good things come to those who wait (via Arvind):

I seem to be having a Pet Shop Boys period, wouldn't you say? Strange, because I never really liked them when they were popular. Anyway, they did make great video clips, even though they were slightly homo-erotic:

Bring it back again

I've been lagging behind on posting lately. Blame it on work, the autumn holidays and our trip to Paris.

More about that later, but first I have to do what I had been wanting to do for some time: point you to one of the winners at the first ever Belgian MIXX Awards (Marketing and Interactive Excellence): the 'Bring the love back' campaign that Openhere developed for Microsoft Digital Advertising Solutions (which also happen to be one of the sponsors of our college's CONGA Award, but that's beside the point and only meant as a quick plug for our own little award :-) ). And why the sudden hurry? Well, because the MIXX Awards were handed out on 18 October and because even Philip Young beat me to it...

Anyway: this just about sums up the situation in which traditional advertisers are today:

Needless to say the title of this campaign also reminded me of a song that is still stuck somewhere in the corner of my mind. Careful: you might be humming it all day long...

Burma shave?

My college pal Steven has a new blog, entirely dedicated to shaving. That's right. And it's in French to boot. So you have the opportunity to learn everything you need to know how to keep those cheeks soft as baby skin and/or polish your French at the same time.

Personally, I am not so fond of clean shaved men. Well, I'm not fond of men altogether. But you get the picture, right? My French, however, can do with some improving...

Anyway, just discovered this great commercial on Steven's blog. It's just too good not to share...

By the way: any reason is good enough for a Tom Waits reference...

Beauty and brains

Just a post to set you off smiling into the weekend...

A pre-emptive post (2)

I don't have many new year's resolutions. The reason is that I don't really believe in them. I could of course tell you I'll try and be polite, gentle, respectful and so on in 2007. But I am not going to. Instead I would like to say sorry in advance for all the stupid things I am bound to write, post, say and do in 2007... Or was I just looking for an excuse to point you to this great ad? Whatever... Happy new year! :-)

Familiar?

No, not laziness this time. But hard work and toil are taking most of my time nowadays. After all, the new academic year starts Monday. I have, amongst other things, been working on a wiki that later this year should serve as a platform for some new media workshops. It is in Dutch, but if you do understand the language (or have the time and patience to read it with a dictionary nearby :-) ), please have a look. All remarks are welcome.

Mind you, I did take sufficient time for the more essential things in life. Essential, but nevertheless sometimes leading to embarrassing situations. Situations for which the 4-letter word S##T is probably the most commonly used term:

Toiletpaper_internet

Anyway, if you have never been in a similar tight spot before, count yourself lucky. But I guess it's quite recognisable to most of us. At least recognisable enough to be part of a pretty nice campaign (If only life were as easy as navigating on the web)... [more via]

Doggie style

Dogs seem to be doing the trick in advertising and communication nowadays...

... especially when dog products are involved :-) :

Even Ikea has managed to create a real internet buzz with a photo of a family and their dog (the latter alledgedly flaunting a human penis) inside their new catalogue (with a zoom version of the picture here):

Dog_ikea

Sure, they did not do it on purpose (or at least that's what they say - and I tend to believe them, probably unlike this guy), but still, the buzz is there:

Considering the fact that the Ikea catalogue is getting more wide-spread than the bible (175 million copies across 35 countries), this photo will be seen by a lot of families. And, who knows, their dogs...

Veggie's the new black, darling

Vegetarians

Yep, you might have seen this one before. Doesn't matter. Just thought I'd post it for all the people having turned veggie recently ánd currently trying desperately to convert everybody else as well... Mind you: personally I believe the world would be a better place if we all (in the western world, that is) ate a lot less meat. Here, at Moerestraat 54, we try to. But without spreading the green gospel too much. And vegetarian or not: it's just still a great ad.

BTW: I thought that my posting rate would go up during the summer vacation. It hasn't really, so far. I guess my subconscious is reminding me of the fact that vacation comes from the latin word 'vacare', which means something like 'to be empty'. I guess I'll just go along with it. I had, for example, thought of writing an entire essay on the doping affair surrounding the Tour de France, on how tragic it is for cycling, on how blind the public is at times, on how much we like to be blind and simply enjoy the sport, on how unfair it is that riders have stopped being treated as normal people and/or employees and can be found guilty without anything being proved beyond a reasonable doubt, on how, on the other hand, difficult times ask for difficult measures, ... And so on. But I have decided that there has already been enough said about it. And the weather is far too nice to sit behind a computer, anyway. So I'll just go cycling and enjoy the summer. I hope you can do the same! Oh, and before I forget: The Hip were great at Cactus, and Buffalo Tom was brilliant.

Breastfeeding is said to be better, but...

Exams are marked, papers are read... life can return to normal. Just some end-of-the-year red tape to get through and posting should return to a normal rate as well. Let's start with this simple but great campaign. After all, I love English and I love great ads. I do prefer the real thing to a rubber dummy, but still...
